Yesterday, Grimsby MP Lia Nici and I welcomed Business Minister, Kwasi Kwarteng, to Grimsby to announce a £90 million programme to clean-up heavy industry on the Humber. This new initiative will harness electricity generated in the North Sea to power a new hydrogen economy.
Part of the £90 million national package is a £7.5 million investment in a huge Gigastack scheme, which will see offshore wind energy used to produce hydrogen. This will help to make Phillips 66's Humber Refinery more environmentally friendly.
The Humber is already a world-leader in the offshore wind industry and we are committed to attracting high quality, innovative projects to the area.
Mr Kwarteng said: "I think Grimsby is absolutely central. Not only have we got the offshore wind, with Orsted based here, we are also right in the middle of the Humber industrial cluster, the largest industrial cluster in the UK.
"If you can get decarbonisation right here, you create a great benefit here. Grimsby is at the centre of that."
