At Energy Questions, Martin pressed the Minister on what the Government is doing to ensure the accuracy of meters.
The Minister, Michael Fallon, responded by stating that, "energy suppliers are required to investigate if a customer suspects that their energy meter is not recording consumption accurately" (in an honest, professional, and transparent manner). He continued, "if necessary, a consumer can request that the meter be independently tested by a meter examiner appointed by the National Measurement Office."
In response to this, Martin highlighted the case of a consumer working in the Cleethorpes constituency, who was overcharged and offered a rebate of £2,548. He then brought to the attention of the Minister the fact that the individual in question was well able to pay the £96 fee, and to go through the process, however, a more vulnerable customer might not be.
