Martin Vickers joined a cross-party delegation of MPs in meeting the Prime Minister to discuss long-term flood defence funding for the Humber region. This follows other action Martin has taken following December's tidal surge: raising flooding issues in the House of Commons; meeting with ministers; holding community surgeries and update meetings to inform residents of progress; and meeting with the Environment Agency.
At the meeting with David Cameron, Martin discussed the report by local councils around the Humber which called for £888 million of investment in local flooding defences over the next decade.
Martin said of the meeting: "It was extremely valuable to meet with the Prime Minister, and to put the case for strengthening flood defences around the Humber estuary. Mr Cameron clearly recognised the strategic importance of many of the industries in Immingham and other areas, and also the suffering felt by the local community who have been affected by the tidal surge."
He continued: "When plans for flood defences have been finalised, and submitted to both the Environment Secretary and the Treasury, it is encouraging to know that when spending decisions are being taken, ministers concerned, including the Prime Minister, have been personally made-aware of our local circumstances."
