Martin met the Prime Minister on Wednesday 18th November along with Baroness Liz Redfern from North Lincs Council, Andrew Percy, MP for Brigg and Goole, and Nic Dakin, MP for Scunthorpe, to discuss the future of the Scunthorpe Steelworks. Around 200 of Martin's constituents work at the plant, and many also work in ports and logistics, which is an area that is heavily influenced by what happens in Scunthorpe. In fact, Tata Steel has a site on Immingham docks in Martin's constituency.
After the meeting, Martin Vickers said ā it is clear that the Government are putting together an extremely good series of measures that will ensure a sustainable future for the Scunthorpe works. The Prime Minister repeated his commitment that steel production will continue in Scunthorpe. We also explored other measures that are being developed to provide alternative employment in the area. All in all, Iām now confident that everything possible is being done to deliver a long-term future for the Scunthorpe works and to help those who face redundancy.ā
