Martin is proud to support Mayflower 2020 which will mark the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower from Plymouth UK to Plymouth Massachusetts.
This is a unique opportunity to commemorate the legacy of the passengers and crew who undertook the journey and to highlight their stories and heritage, which is embedded in communities across the UK, US and Netherlands.
Martin has highlighted the importance of Immingham to the Mayflower's journey and today raised the matter in the House of Commons:
Martin Vickers, Cleethorpes
I urge the Minister not to forget Immingham in my constituency, which also played a major part in where the pilgrim fathers sailed from. Will he ensure that Immingham is a major player in any celebrations?
Robert Jenrick, The Exchequer Secretary
I have tried to list all the places where the pilgrim fathers came from. I was not aware that some came from Immingham as well, but I am sure that that will be included in the celebrations.
The importance of Immingham centres around Immingham Creek (now part of the large port of Immingham). On the nearby green, Pilgrim Park, there is a memorial to those who made the journey, the Pilgrim Monument. The memorial was organised in 1924 by the Anglo-American Society and is made with rock from Plymouth, Massachusetts.
