Immingham 100 gives money to Community Projects
Martin Vickers MP assisted in handing over £121,500 to two Community projects. They were engagement group OneVoice and community learning centre, Oasis Academy Immingham. The Money was raised with a series of activites celebrating the past, present and future of the port and town of Immingham. The money was handed over in the form of a large gold coin suspended from the Association of British Ports' Leibherr 944 mechanical handler.
Immingham port's centenary year began in early February with a banquet for 100 Immingham pensioners and ended with a Christmas part for 100 local school children. These were both hosted by the Oasis Academy Immingham. Other activities during the year included 'Follow the Flame', a port community 8-a-side soccer tournament and a 100 hole one-day golf challenge as well as the Port Open Day.
The Oasis Academy will invest its share of the money in supporting literacy in Immingham with the development of a Learning Resources Cente to provide resources and intervention strategies for students with low reading ability. Other projects which will benefit include an Immingham Community Choir, a summer sake school, new equipment for Stallingborough Youth Club and an Immingham Fairtrade town inititative. Funds have also been earmarked for a new soft play centre in Immingham.
The money will also allow OneVoice to continue its work in the area in encouraging projects to improve the quality of life within the local community in the years to come.
