Martin welcomed the Rail Minister, Claire Perry MP, to the Cleethorpes constituency today.
During the visit, the Minister toured the Port of Immingham where the importance of the rail freight network was highlighted, before visiting Cleethorpes itself.
Martin explained the importance of rail freight investment, commenting: "Twenty five per cent of the nation's rail freight tonnage passes through Immingham, and it is an absolutely vital part of the regional and national economy."
Martin also took the visit as an opportunity to continue his campaign in showing the Government just how important the direct rail link from Cleethorpes to Manchester Airport is. Martin has spoken many times on this issue both in and outisde the House of Commons, following the consultation document which suggested the link might not be included in the next rail franchise.
Martin said: "Getting the minister here was a vital part of the campaign and I am delighted she is here and that we have been able to impress on her at ground level how important the service is." - the Government's response to the consultation will be announced in December.
