Martin has joined other political, community and faith leaders in NE Lincolnshire to make a joint statement on the unacceptable scenes of rioting and destruction that have taken place across the UK in recent days.
Signatories to this statement urge local residents to maintain the spirit of cooperation we have seen for many years in our area and to support "a period of calm both on social media and in our day to day lives.”
The joint statement is as follows:
“Recent events across the country have been deeply concerning for many of us. As leaders in faith, community, and politics in North East Lincolnshire, we are thankful that our towns and villages have not experienced similar scenes of destruction.
In recent months, our nation has come together to celebrate our shared identity through sports, food, and culture, appreciating both our diversity and our common bonds.
We understand people may have legitimate concerns, and as representatives and leaders, we are committed to listening and taking appropriate action. Peaceful protest is a vital part of our democracy, but it is unacceptable to attack homes, businesses, places of worship, or assault police officers. These are the very institutions and individuals that work to ensure our safety. We stand with them in their efforts to put an end to the violence.
In North East Lincolnshire, our communities have worked well together for many years, and we are determined to maintain this spirit of cooperation. We urge everyone in North East Lincolnshire to support a period of calm both on social media and in our day to day lives.”
